In Southern California, winter typically lasts for a few mild weeks. Rain is rare. So, there is usually plenty of time to work on outdoor plumbing problems without having to consider the weather. This season is an exception. Diamond Bar, California, where JB Plumbing is based, 5½ of rain had fallen by this time last year. This year, so far, more than five times that amount has fallen. So, hunker down and enjoy the rest of the cool weather this winter and turn your attention to indoor plumbing.
- Toilets: Since their invention in 1596 by Sir John Harrington, the flush toilet has done arguably more to change life than any other plumbing-related fixture. Unfortunately, toilets can be temperamental. Keep yours in good condition by regularly cleaning out the tank seat, bowl, handle and rim, and flushing with each use. Some systems save water, with less water required for liquid waste than solid. If you drop cleaning tablets into the tank, make sure you close the lid after each use, to keep pets out of harm’s way. For tips about how to fix a toilet that “runs,” see our post last week.
- Leaks: Since more pipes freeze and burst in winter, take care of your pipes now so they’ll take care of you. The most important step to take to prevent leaks is observation. Keep your eyes peeled for plumbing problems, which often show up in the form of water or reduced water pressure. If you suspect a leak, call a plumber right away…before the leak worsens. If you catch a pinhole leak in time, you may eliminate the need to replace the whole thing.
- Water Heaters: Hot showers are more appealing in colder climes. So, to make sure your water stays hot while there’s a chill in the air, baby your water heater. Unless you house inside the warm home, wrap it in insulation. This will guarantee you have hot water when you need it for showering, dish washing, laundry, cooking, and more.
